(A seller of) Biznagas....They smell so well...

The "biznaga" is a small floral arrangement using jasmine flowers. The little flowers head are mounted onto the dried stalk of another Mediterranean plant known as "ammi visage" thus creating the final arrangement. The jasmine flowers are picked at dusk when they are still closed so that it is easier to string them together. At nigthfall the blossoms open turning into an amazing white ball of heady fragance.

The cork is extracted from the cork tree every ten years. Cork harvesting is done without machinery by people specialized in this hard job and does not harm the tree. Cork Oak live about 150 to 250 years and is widely cultivated in Málaga and Cádiz.

A bit closer

Bougainvillea glabra is sometimes referred to as "paper flower" because the bracts are thin and papery. The fruit is a narrow five-lobed achene.

Smiling for my daily photo

Three happy couples with their children... one, two and... three. Behind them, boungainvillea in bloom in the wall of the Museo Picasso. The name of this flower comes from Louis Antoine de Boungainville, an admiral in the French Navy who encountered the plant in Brazil in 1768.

Vespa: from wasp to scooter (2/3)

After the second world war, the aeronautical engineer Corradino D'Ascanio, was given the job of designing a simple, robust and affordable vehicle by Enrico Piaggio. The vehicle had to be easy to drive for both men and women, be able to carry a passenger, and not get its driver's clothes dirty.
Consequently, in 1946 Piaggio launched the Vespa (Italian for "wasp") scooter, and within 10 years over a million units had been produced.

Design Exhibition (1/3)

Javier Mariscal has chosen some objects designed by many artists during the last century for this exhibition.

Five-petaled pansies in the city ....

The name "pansy" is derived from the French word pensée meaning "thought", and was so named because the flower resembles a human face. In August it nods forward as if deep in thought. The Spanish name is algo "thoughts"...

The moorish past: one thousand years ago...

View of the Alcazaba de Málaga, a moorish fortification dating from the 8th century although much of it was built around the middle of the 11th century for King Badis of Granada and served as the palace of the governors of the city. In that time, Malaga was comunicated with all the Mediterranean area by sea. The big walls of the fortress defended the city from the enemy who arrived by sea. Details of a window of the inner palace. Nowadays this style of construction continues in many buildings of Andalusia.

Processions

Sunday, 16 March 2008

Everything is ready

This is Larios Street, the main street of the city. All these chairs are ready for the "religious procession" that will be celebrated in the next ten days. In every procession a Virgin and/or Crist are carried around the city center by 200 men and meanwhile the rest of the people are sitting in this chairs or stand up waiting for the procession. These days the people go out to eat, drink, talk, walk, ... whatever. The partying atmosphere is everywhere.
